Volunteers actively listen to callers without judgement or bias. The service provides a safe environment in which callers can talk through their thoughts, ultimately coming to their own resolution/solution.
Confidentiality is the core rule which Nightline volunteers are obligated to uphold. Any contact is kept within the Nightline service and is not disclosed to anyone. Not even Student Services or the Students’ Union. We hope that by offering this confidential service, you will trust us with your deepest concerns.
Why you might need Nightline
During your time at university there may be times when you need someone to listen to everything that is going on in your life. Especially around coursework deadlines and exam season things can feel like they are getting on top of you. Family and friends are a vital crutch for many, but if you have something you don’t want to admit to family, or maybe your friends are what is upsetting you – give Nightline a call.
Things people have been in touch about before include:
- Fallen out with flatmates
- Money issues
- Relationship issues
- Loss of a loved one
- Stress or anxiety
- Course problems and more!
Although Nightline volunteers will do their best not to give you direct advice, many find it helpful to be able to talk everything through with an independent third person who is not connected to the situation in any way, and so can listen and talk through possible solutions without bias or judgement.
How to get in touch
If you would like to get in touch with Nightline for either listening support or information, you can between 8pm-2am each night during term time through following options:

Remember, all volunteers are trained and all contacts are treated as 100% confidential.
Volunteer for Nightline
If you’d like to become a member of our team applications open twice a year; once in September and again January. It’s a great way to meet like minded individuals and looks great on your CV.
The volunteer base is a mix of students purely wanting to give up some free time, and students of Health and Social Sciences courses undertaking their 120 hour Professional Practice Placement. There is nothing to stop anyone applying.
