Our team of resident and welfare tutors look after over 1,600 students based in halls of residence on the Treforest campus and in the private sector halls in Cardiff. Currently Newport halls do not have Resident & Welfare Tutor provision.

Resident and Welfare Tutors

The Life in student halls UniLife channel hosts detailed information about Resident and Welfare Tutors.

The Resident Tutors on the Treforest campus are responsible for the welfare and discipline of resident students, whereas the Welfare Tutors based in Cardiff are responsible for the pastoral care of resident students. All of our residential tutors are either postgraduate students or full-time University staff working within the Student Services department and act as a first point of contact for any issues you may face whilst living in halls.

Roles and responsibilities

Resident and Welfare Tutors’ responsibilities vary widely. However, there are fixed responsibilities that are undertaken. To give you a better insight into the role a Resident Tutors play, we have detailed their main responsibilities below.

Senior Resident Tutors

  • to exercise pastoral responsibility and care for students resident in Halls
  • to exercise line responsibility for Resident Tutors
  • to maintain good order within the Hall and, where necessary, to exercise disciplinary powers in accordance with the Halls Disciplinary Procedure
  • to encourage resident students to participate in Halls life through social and other events
  • to participate in induction meetings and informal meetings as directed by the Principal Resident Tutor and/or Head of Student Services
  • to liaise with other Resident Tutors, Accommodation Services, and Student Services and to keep abreast with all activities and developments within Halls and the University generally
  • to liaise, communicate with all student bodies and representatives and all those sectors of the University which support and interface with Halls
  • to become familiar with and to assist in the execution of all Health and Safety procedures
  • to encourage a broad spectrum of participation in Halls life and the development of good relationships in the wider community
  • to be available throughout the term for student consultation and to participate in a duty rota to ensure that all students and outside agencies have an immediate named person to contact in the event of an emergency or other pressing matters.

Resident Tutors

The Resident Tutor team deliver a quality Welfare and Disciplinary Service to resident students through the adoption of various good practices and policies. These good practices include:

  • Newly arrived students are welcomed, shown around their home and assisted in settling in their new environment
  • Development and adoption of protocols and procedures to effectively deal with problematic situations such as Mental Ill-Health and Meningitis
  • Protecting the wellbeing of residents from ill-behaved individuals through the implementation of Halls and University Regulations
  • Ability to respond instantaneously to pressing matters and in cases of emergencies
  • Monitoring of services and accommodation standards. Liaise with other member of staff involved in running Halls (Resident Tutors Service & Hall Managers) to ensure a consistently high quality customer service.

Welfare Tutors

  • To exercise pastoral responsibility and care for students based in Cardiff in their area of responsibility.
  • To encourage resident students to participate in halls life through social and other events.
  • To arrange and deliver induction meetings and informal meetings as directed by the Resident Tutors Services Manager and/or Director of Student Services.
  • To liaise with the relevant Liberty Living accommodation staff and Student Services and to keep abreast with all activities and developments within halls and the University generally.
  • To liaise and communicate with all student bodies and representatives and with all other relevant external agencies as appropriate and necessary.
  • To become familiar with and to assist in the execution of all health and safety procedures.
  • To attend meetings as directed by the Resident Tutors Services Manager and/or Director of Student Services.
  • To encourage a broad spectrum of participation in halls life and the development of good relationships in the wider community.
  • To normally be in residence during term-time and to be available throughout the term for student consultation and to participate in duty rota which will exist to ensure that all University resident students in Cardiff halls and outside agencies have an immediate named person to contact in the event of an emergency or other pressing matter.
  • To support and cultivate the University’s Mission Statement at all times.
  • To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Resident Tutors Service Manager and/or Director of Student Services.
