Council Tax Letters

  • A Council Tax Exemption Certificate (Council Tax Letter) can help prove to your local council you don’t have to pay Council Tax
  • Full-time students can request a Council Tax Exemption Certificate online
  • Part-time students should contact their Advice Zone

A Council Tax Exemption Certificate is often referred to as a ‘Council Tax Letter’.

If you are enrolled as a full-time student, you can request a Council Tax exemption certificate online. If you are not a full-time student but still think that you are eligible for Council Tax exemption and therefore require a certificate, please contact the Advice Zone on your campus.

Please note, the letter will not usually be available until the first teaching week of term.

Returning students may be able to view their previous year’s letter until the new letter is available.

How to request a Council Tax Exemption Certificate

Log into UniLife and go to the Academic details page in Your Account. Click the button labelled Request Council Tax Certificate.

You will be taken to another page explaining how you print and/or save the document.
Note – if you try to open the document in your web browser and are asked for a password, then instead download the document and open it from your computer’s desktop.

Non-standard Council Tax Letters

If you are eligible for Council Tax Exemption, but need a letter that isn’t being produced by the automatic tool (for example, a letter for a past academic year), please contact the Advice Zone on your campus.
